'Tango': a new mango cultivar
1996
Lavi, U.
During the past seven years we have examined over 10,000 mango (Mangifera indica L.) seedlings attempting to select new cultivars with better performances than the available commercial cultivars. 'Tango' was selected in 1989, at the ARO Bet-Dagan experimental orchard. Its female parent is 'Naomi' and the pollen donor could be 'Keitt'.The tree is medium in size and starts bearing fruit at three years. The harvest season is mid-August to mid-September in the coastal plain of Israel. The fruit is oblong with a pointed beak. Fruit size is uniform with an average weight of about 380g. The mature fruit is orange, blushed with brilliant red. The flesh is juicy, tender, and fiberless. It has a mild, sweet and sour flavor. The fruit can be stored for nine days at 20 Celsius degrees and 21 days at 14 Celsius degrees. 'Tango' is being patented, and budwood may be obtained from the ARO, the Volcani Center, P.O.Box 6, Bet-Dagan 50250 Israel
