Pamol Plantations Sdn Bhd started DxP seed production in 1985 at Kluang. Trials were established from 1987 to compare the performance of Pamol DxP with other Malaysian DxP seed sources. Results to date from four trials at Pamol show that Pamol DxP is superior for oil yield. This oil yield superiority arises from better tenera fruit characteristics and higher oil to bunch ratio, as well as high hybrid purity. Similar results have been obtained from a trial carried out independently by another major plantation research organisation. Kernel yield of Pamol DxP is lower. However, higher oil yield and its higher value compared to kernels maintains the superiority of Pamol DxP for value of total products yield. Since 1988, virtually all plantings at Pamol Plantations' estates have been with Pamol Dxp. Fruit type surveys done in blocks planted up to 1992 show less than 1 per cent dura palms. Pamol DxP also has a lighter canopy, implying better partitioning of photosynthetic dry matter production. In the long run, this may translate into an even greater yield advantage if ongoing density trials confirm that Pamol DxP can be planted at higher density.
