Novel strategies on N management to improve the internal cycling of nitrogen in the integrated fruit orchards

The internal cycling of nitrogen has been shown to be a major source of nitrogen used for the early growth stages and for both flowering and fruit set. The processes of internal cycling comprise seasonal nitrogen storages, followed by remobilization during either spring or during leaf senescence. Novel strategies of fertilizing fruit trees should fulfill the following objectives: increase the N reserves in perennial tree organs; provide adequate N to flower buds for strong fruit set; avoid high N content in fruits and prevent excessive shoot growth. Enhancing the efficiency of the internal cycling of N and reducing the spring application of N through the soil may be achieved by fertilizing trees with small amounts of N well in advance to leaf senescence. In alternative to the soil supply, which may increase the risk of nitrate pollution, canopy sprays of urea in post-harvest represent a promising tool for fertilizing integrated fruit orchards
