Beans past, present and future: An Ugandan perspective

This paper provides a historical review of changing objectives of bean breeding in Uganda from 1961 until 1973. Purity, yield, disease resistance and adaptation were the earlier objectives. Towards the end of the 1960s protein level and animo acid composition as a surrogate for nutritional value were adopted. Level of lectin anti-nutritional factors were considered to be odf significant importance but did not, in terms of suitability of beans for feeding to young children, become a major breeding objective. When the bean programme in Makerere had to be temporarily abandoned in 1973, no progress had been made in finding how to address the crucial problem of reducing the flatulence inducing power of beans. The second part ot the paper examines organoleptic and nutritional breeding objectives. The genetic basis for the after darkening of beans during storage at elevated temperature and humidity is reviewed
