Some highland banana production constraints in Masaka district of Central Uganda

Evaluation of major banana production constraints in Uganda was carried out between April 1992 and December 1993. Plantation management is the overiding contributor to declining banana yields. Small bunches characterise much of the low management plantations. These plantations generally have poor crop hygiene, are weedy, overcrowded, and plants are heavily infested with weevils and nematodes. Improved agronomic practices such as soil amendment, reduction of weevil infestation trapping and use of pesticides and mulching resulted into significant increase in growth rate and yields from these plantations. Plots which received a combination of pesticides, fertilizers and mulch, and those near homesteads and well managed had the best crops. Moisture stress was serious in the dry season, and banana plants in mulched plots performed better due to conservation by the mulches
