Male-Kayiwa, B.S. | Wasswa, J.M. (Kawanda Agricultural Research Institute, Kampala (Uganda))
A review of the status of germplasm collections of various crops at research institutions in the country is given. The climatic, edaphic, biotic and ethinic factors of the country are briefly examined in relation to crop diversity. Information is given on the quality of germplasm collections in-situ and ex-situ, collections origins, conditions of storage, regeneration frequencies and data management. Characterization days are noted as limited leading to low extent of utilization. The implications of the encountered information gaps and infrastructure shortcomings are discussed. Opportunities for further exploration and collection with involvement of foreign missions and established international genebanks are highlighted. The necessity for a centrally coordinated programme on plant genetic resources is emphasised
