The diversity and potential use of local vegetables in Uganda

Uganda is endowed with diverse genotypes of vegetables. A collection made by Goode in 1969-72 showed that there were over 100 species of local vegetables in Uganda. Most of these species are common throughout Uganda, though with different local names. Some of these are localised in different areas and some are harvested from the wild. For many of these vegetables, there is potential for commercial production, moreover they can all be cultivated in small plots around the homestead for home consumption. These vegetables are very nutritious. Some of them such as Amaranthus spp. and Corchorus spp., Manihot utilissima, Phaseolus spp., Solanum spp., and Vigna unguiculata have higher protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, vitamines and calories than exotic vegetables such as cabbages and carrots, and therefore their consumption should be encouraged
