An experiment on grapevine grafting involving the date of gathering of rootstock canes and their mode of storage was set up at the Swiss Federal Agricultural Research Station of Changins using the rootstock variety Fercal. Three dates of collection and five storage methods were compared. The scionwood was the Chasselas cultivar. The percentage of graft take varied considerably according to the date of rootstock gathering. It was highest for the rootstocks collected in January and lowest for those collected at the end of November. Eliminating axillary buds and tendrils before storage lowered the percentage of graft take. For canes collected at the end of November horizontal storage also resulted in a considerably lower graft take
