Air pollution and floristic biodiversity

The number of reports on negative effects of air pollution on biodiversity is increasing. This article presents examples from literature which concern effects of fluoride, nitrogen deposition, and ozone. Today nitrogen loads and levels of tropospheric ozone seem to be the most relevant forms of air pollution affecting species diversity of the flora. Results from recent investigations on ozone effects carried out at Liebefeld (Switzerland) indicate that the loss of floristic diversity in permanent meadows is a possible cause of the high relative sensitivity of some typical species. Further studies will be necessary to validate the results obtained in experiments with single plants at the level of the intact plant community in the field and to identify the critical level of ozone allowing to protect the floristic biodiversity of meadows
