Effect of thinning on parameters of photosynthetic characteristics of Norway spruce canopy, 2: Seasonal changes of photosynthetic pigment content

During the growing season 1992 an analysis of the photosynthesis pigment content (chlorophylls a, b and carotenoids) of needles within the vertical profile of the 34 years old Norway spruce stand (Picea abies) in control and thinned plots was carried out. Generally, the differences between the upper and lower crown layers (up to 66 %), and higher seasonal increments of chlorophyll contenet (up to 55 %) were greater for the canopy of the denser control plot. These changes in radiation conditions caused by thinning were connected with a reduced pigment level in the needles having an average pigment content of 70 % of that of control canopy. However, the obtained values of chlorophyll content in the thinned canopy are far from those known as the chlorophyll compensation point and thus the significant limitation of photosynthesis activity of Norway spruce canopy by the chlorophyll content can not be expected.
