Kibbutz En-Hashofet is located in Efraim Hills region, where avocado had not been grown before. During the first plantings in the region, an experimental orchard was established, in order to evaluate different rootstocks and scion sources for the local conditions. These conditions appear to be favorable for avocado, as the water has low salt content and the soil is fertile, mostly with low lime content. In the Fuerte experiment, the annual average yield was about 1 ton/dunam, fluctuating widely from year to year. Scion sources differed significantly, with Rahan 9 being the best. Rootstocks also had a significant effect on tree size and productivity, with two Mexican and one West-Indian rootstocks, being inducers of better productivity. The West-Indian representative was able to control tree size and hence to improve trees efficiency. In the Ettinger experiment, no effect of scion source on productivity was found.
