The efficacy of nematicides in the control of root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) in andosol, 2: the influence of nematicide application on the population densities of nematode larvae in the soil

Notwithstanding that all of the nematicide treatments, without exception, reduced nematode infection on the roots, thus increasing the tomato yield significantly, still, the population densities of root-knot nematode larvae in the soil were not reduced appreciably by systemic nematicide treatments. Contact nematicides, however, were able to reduce nematode population densities in the soil during the first thirty days of crop growth. Following nematicide treatments, very high numbers of nematodes occurred after harvest, especially in the soil where systemic nematicide treatment had taken place. By contrast, greatest nematode densities were detected in the soil where contact nematicide treatment had been used and in the nontreated control at midgrowing period.
