The agricultural subsector of the sugarcane cultivation for the production of sugar was reviewed in terms of the existing situation, suggestions for improvement as well as an implementation scheme projects were proposed seeking to develop a viable sugar industry aimed at stabilising production at 118,000 tons annually without extending the sugarcane acreage. This would also be in keeping with government's intention to expand crop diversification. The proposed programme aims at improving productivity, selection, extension and management of improved sugarcane varieties, soil moisture regime, fertiliser application, the development of human resources and overall increase in efficiency.
