Report on visit to gulf markets, with special attention to mango

The main purpose of the trip to the potential for Borobo Muyuni mango in the Gulf, and in particular, whether the Gulf market could absorb an increase from a current volume of 100 tons from Zanzibar to 1500 and 2000 tons within the next 10 years. During the winter months, there is a great shortage of mango. The overwhelming impression is that the Gulf can absorb this increase without any detrimental effect on price. An average price of about $3.00/box (4.5 kg) F.O.B. should be expected. If supply were increased to 5000 tons, some slight decrease in price could be excepted. The major competitor is Kenya supplying about 85 of the supply at this time of year. Taste tests and prices show that Boribo Muyuni are superior in the minds of Dubai consumer. Further, trials in selling the Pemban Kifua variety carried out by SALSEF Ltd, show that this too is prefered over the Kenyan varieties
