[Effect of the filter cake on soil and cane production]

A field study was conducted to evaluate the effect of sugar cane filter press mud application on the cane and sugar yields and some soil chemical properties. A Typic Ustropept with a medium fertility level was used. The tests were conducted with two levels of filter press mud, 50 and 100 t/ha, combined in some case with chemical fertilizers. A randomized block design with six treatments and three replications was used. T1: check; T2: complete chemical fertilization; T3: 50 t/ha; T4: 100 t/ha; T5: 50 t/ha + 1/2 chemical fertilization; T6: 100 t/ha + 1/2 chemical fertilization. Soil samples-analysis, foliar tests and juice quality tests were made. Significant levels of P, K, Ca and in the CEC of the soil were found in those levels with filter mud application. Increases in the organic matter in those treatments were found. No changes in pH, electric conductivity, Mg, and micronutrients were obtained. Filter press mud influenced positively the macronutrients levels in the leaves, not so far the micronutrients. There was significant response among treatments in the cane and sugar yields. Treatments T3, T4 and T6 were the best, but T3 showed the highest economic returns.
