Animal and vegetable by-products of the food industry which are used as supplementary protein sources differ in their nutrient content, especially in the amino acid composition and the digestibility of these nutrients. The knowledge of the nutrient content and the digestibility values of feeds is a prerequisite for formulating balanced diets which cover the nutrient requirements of pigs. A digestibility trial with by-products of the meat industry showed that meat meal is a valuable protein source for pigs. Its protein quality is comparable to that of soybean meal. Diets with a minimal protein content, which meet the amino acid requirements of pigs can be formulated using a suitable combination of supplementary protein sources of animal and vegetable origin. Meat meal suits such combinations very well. Moreover, as an indigenous source of calcium and phosphorus, meat meal is an ecologically sound alternative to imported mineral supplements
