Determination of the quality of pig manure compost

Besides comparing several methods of defining the degree of maturity of the final products, the influence of different fermentation techniques on the maturing process of compost was examined within the scope of the FAT project on the biobed system (pig fattening on sawdust bedding). Mixtures of excrement, urine and sowdust were analysed in the following conditions: fresh, after a fermentation phase in the pig house (deep litter), after additional soring in windrows, after composting in a fermentation drum (with varying fermentation times). Fresh material and compost coming directly from the pig house show high ammonium and low nitrate contents. Some of the composts coming from the fermentation drum or the windrows show high nitrate contents. The longer the composting process in the fermentation drum the higher the nitrate content. The ammonium content of compost correlates negatively with the compatibility for plants. The higher the ammonium content the lower the compatibility for plants. As shown by analyses of nitrogen mineralization in the soil, the Nmin content of fresh material drops towards zero
