Total mercury content was determined using a cold-vapour AAS technique in 177 samples of 17 mushroom species. The samples were collected in unpolluted rural areas of the Czech Republic. High mean values 4.56, 5.03, 5.04, 5.38, 6.96, 7.99 and 10.5 mg/kg dry matter were found in Boletus edulis, Lepiota procera, Lepista nuda, Lepiota rhacodes, Agaricus campestris, Agaricus arvensis and Calocybe gambosa, respectively. The maximal values were several times higher. Mercury was distributed unevenly within fruiting bodies of three Boletus species with the highest level in gills and the lowest in stems.
