A new disease called Bacterial Red Stripe (BRS) was found on rice, particularly on IR 64 in Pabuaran, Subang West Java on the first of July 1987. The pathogen is very potential in causing yield loss, which can lead to decreasing national rice production in the future. The experiment was carried out to study the characteristics of the BRS pathogen with in comparison with Pseudomonas avenae Mann and Pseudomonas glumae Kurita et Tabei. The results have shown that the BRS pathogen has similar characteristic as P. avenae. Therefore it could be concluded that both the BRS pathogen and P. avenae belong to the same species. Nevertheless since the symptoms produced on rice (var. IR 64) were rather different, the Bacterial Red Stripe pathogen and P. avenae might be regarded as different pathovars of the same species
