Crossbreeding of Thai long tail wool sheep and Cameroon hair sheep - evaluation of different genotypes

A crossbreeding project involving Cameroon hair sheep and the local Thai Long Tail wool sheep is in progress at the University of Malaya farm, conducted in collaboration with Humboldt University of Berlin, Germany. One of the main objectives of the study is to develop a woolless variety of sheep better adapted to the hot and humid tropical climate. Various genotypes with different percentages of hair sheep genes are being produced (F1, F2, F3, Backcrosses) and evaluated for growth, reproduction and other traits. The F1 crossbreds were found to be better than their parents in growth (P 0.05), age at maturity (P 0.01) and reproductive performance.
