A research program was initiated in North Sumatra, Indonesia, to develop integrated systems of raising hair sheep in rubber and oil palm plantations. Local Sumatra sheep have a high reproductive potential but are small in size. To improve the productivity of the local breed two exotic breeds, Virgin Island St. Croix and Barbados Blackbelly have been introduced and used in a crossbreeding program. Among the major constraints to successful sheep production in North Sumatra are internal parasites, especially gastro-intestinal parasites, which are responsible for reduced production and severe economic losses. This review of previous studies on the parasite problem in North Sumatra found that the intensity of nematode infection in North Sumatra was very high with Trichostrongyllus collubriformis, T. axei and Haemonchus contortus the most common species reported. Three alternatives to control the gastro-intestinal parasites problem are: anthelmintic treatment program, grazing pasture rotation management, and selection for genetic resistance of sheep to gastrointestinal parasite infection. A combination of these three alternatives will be the best method to control gastro-intestinal parasites problems in North Sumatra
