A national rice breeding program currently attempts to understand the factors influencing Cambodian rainfed lowland farmers strategies in variety maintenance and choice. For a successful implementation of the breeding program, this report is the result of research carried out on the understanding of breeding priorities and objectives for the development of rice species with respect to the yield, the connection between varietal duration and field level, water regime, agronomic characteristics of varieties and grain quality. Cultural aspects must also be taken into account in the choice of the species
