Effects of mepiquat-chloride on the roots and canopy growth of irrigated cotton crop [Basilicata]

The results of a trial carried out in a plain of Southern Italy aimed at testing the effect of the growth retardant mepiquat-chloride given at a dose of 49 g ha*[-1] a.i. on well-irrigated cotton crop are reported. At the shoot level, the treated plants were shorter than the control and with less dry matter accumulation in stems and bolls, whereas only tendential reduction was observed for the LAI, the leaf number, mean surface and dry weight and a tendential increase in the unit leaf weight. As for the root, a total reduction in root lenght was observed, mainly in the 0-20 cm deep layer. As regards the seed-cotton yield, there were were no statistically significant differences between the control and the mepiquat-chloride treatment, although the latter exhibited tendentially higher values. The seed-cotton yield to total dry weight ratio was higher for the mepiquat-chloride treated plants

Si riportano i risultati di una ricerca condotta nella pianura metapontina (Policoro (MT)) volta a valutare l'effetto del regolatore di crescita mMepiquat-cChloride alla dose di 49 g ha*[-1] p.a. su di una coltura irrigua di cotone. Relativamente alla parte epigea, le piante trattate con il fitoregolatore hanno evidenziato, rispetto al controllo, una statura inferiore ed un minor accumulo di sostanza secca nei fusti e nelle capsule, mentre solo tendenziali sono risultati la riduzione del LAI, del numero, della superficie media e del peso secco delle foglie, e l'incremento del peso unitario delle stesse. A livello ipogeo, invece, si e' osservata una riduzione complessiva della lunghezza radicale, maggiormente concentrata nello strato 0-20 cm di profondita'. La produzione di fibra grezza non ha evidenziato differenze statisticamente significative tra il controllo e la tesi trattata, anche se quest'ultima ha sempre mostrato valori tendenzialmente superiori; il rapporto tra la produzione di fibra grezza ed il peso secco complessivo della pianta, invece, e' risultato superiore per la tesi trattata con il regolatore di crescita
