Preliminary study was carried out to determine the effect of physico-chemical characteristics of sago fiber on physical strength of pulp. Pulp was prepared with chemical process by using the mixture of sodium hydroxyde (14, 16, 18 and 20 percent), and antraqinon (0,1 percent), and cooking temperature at 160 deg. C and 165 deg. C for 3.5 hours. Results indicated that optimum cooking temperature was 160 deg. C with sodium hydroxyde concentration of 18 percent. Physical strength of the obtained pulp was relatively low (S = 7.6 nm at the power of 2/kg R = 3.7 Mn/kg, T = 40 KN/kg). The low physical strength was mainly due to some physical and chemical properties of fiber used (higher thicker of cell, rungkel number 1, higher solubility and higher holocellulose and lignin contents)
