Molecular markers for genotype identification in small grain cereals

英语. Since the beginning of the century, varietal characterization of small grain cereals has been based upon morphophysiological traits and, more recently, isozymes amd seed storage proteins. The limitations of these traditional descriptors are their restricted number and the small portion of the variability investigated. Furthermore, they need a complete growth cycle of a certain number of plants for assessment and are to some extent subjected to environmental effect modifications. New and more powerful tools based on molecular markers have been proposed for a more precise assessment of the genetic similary between cultivars. Molecular markers are available in a theoretically unlimited number and are independent by the environment. In this paper, the main molecular markers available for varietal characterization are presented and discussed. Appropriate statistical tools that facilitate the evaluation of genetic distances among genotypes are also reviewed and discussed. There are, presently, valuable tools for fingerprinting and the field is in rapid and continuous evolution. Varietal identification in the future will be based on a strong integration of the knowledge developed for each small cereal, on the use of the most stable polymorphic and well distributed markers, but also on the concept that the best system is not always the last one developed

[Dall'inizio del secolo, la caratterizzazione varietale dei cereali a granella piccola e' stata basata su caratteri morfo-fisiologici e, piu' di recente, sugli isoenzimi e sulle proteine di riserva del seme. Le limitazioni di questi descrittori tradizionali sono relative al loro numero ridotto e alla limitatezza della variabilita' investigata. Inoltre, essi richiedono, per la raccolta dei dati utili alla caratterizzazione, un ciclo completo di crescita di un certo numero di piante e sono, entro certi limiti, influenzabili dalle modificazioni delle condizioni ambientali. Per un piu' preciso accertamento delle affinita' genetiche fra le cultivar sono stati proposti strumenti piu' efficaci, basati sui marcatori molecolari. I marcatori molecolari sono disponibili in numero teoricamente illimitato e sono indipendenti dall'ambiente. In questo articolo vengono presentati e discussi i principali marcatori molecolari disponibili per la caratterizzazione varietale. Sono pure passati in rassegna gli strumenti statistici adatti per agevolare la valutazione delle distanze genetiche fra i genotipi. Al momento, esistono strumenti validi per la caratterizzazione e il settore e' in evoluzione rapida e contunua. In futuro l'identificazione delle varieta' sara' basata su una forte integrazione delle conoscenze acquisite per ogni cereale, sull'impiego dei marcatori polimorfici piu' stabili e ben distribuiti, ma anche sul concetto che il sistema migliore non e' mai l'ultimo sviluppato]
