Inheritance of grain yield and grain yield components in barley

An F2-generation, half-diallel cross of eight barley parents (Hordeum vulgare L. subsp. vulgare, Tichedrett, Saida, Belivia, Barberousse, Fedora, Faiz, Harmal and Acsad 176) was grown in a randomized complete block design with three replications along with the parental lines, at the Agricultural Experi-ment Station of Setif, Algeria. The results indicated that both additive (D) and dominance (Hi) gene effects were significant for number of spikes, kernel weight and kernels/head. For grain yield, only the Hi component was significant, indicating a preponderance of dominance gene effects in the inheritance of this character. The degree of dominance ranged from dominance for kernel weight to overdominance for the other traits. These was an assymetrical distribution of positive and negative gene effects in the parental material for all the characters studied. Dominant genes out-numbered recessive genes for number of spikes, kernels/head and kernel weight, but recessive genes out-numbered dominant genes for grain yield. Dominance acted in the direction of high expression of kernels/head. For grain yield and kernel weight, dominant genes acting toward high expression and recessive genes acting toward low expression of these characters coexisted in equal proportion in the parents. Heritability estimates were medium in the broad sense and low in the narrow sense for kernels/head, number of spikes and kernel weight
