Tourism is a labour intensive sector in which the product is made for and by people. The origin of ecotourism lies in nature tourism and is a junction of physical, economical and social interests. In other words ecotourism contributes to a strong involvement with nature and a feeling of social responsibility (=sustainable development). The demand for ecotourism has increased. Ecotourism is not an unambiguous concept, it is a means of nature conservation but still earning money. Some of the topics discussed in this report are the contribution of ecotourism to the economy of Suriname and the activities of the N.V. METS as Surinames largest tour operator and the creating of employment in the areas in which they operate
