英语. Large-scale development projects such as the manmade Brokopondo lake have a major impact on the aquatic ecosystems of Suriname. This article considers aspects of a management strategy that aims at the optimum production of aquatic animals such as fish. The process of aquatic production is elucidated by comparing it to the assembly-line production in a modern industrial plant. Key issues in understanding aquatic production are the river continuum concept and the ecotone concept. The effects of animals, plants, microorganisms and interactions within the foodweb on aquatic production are discussed. The present theoretical dissertation on aquatic production has important implications for the management of aquatic ecosystems and aquaculture production

In Suriname zijn in de afgelopen decennia grootschalige ontwikkelingsprojecten ten uitvoer gebracht die een belangrijke impact hebben gehad op de natuurlijke aquatische ecosystemen. In het onderhavige artikel wordt nagegaan hoe de natuurlijke en kunstmatig aangelegde waterlichamen beheerd dienen te worden om de aquatische dierlijke produktie te optimaliseren. Het proces van aquatische produktie wordt nader uiteen gezet aan de hand van een vergelijking met het lopende band systeem van produktie in een moderne fabriek. Sleutelbegrippen die leiden tot een beter begrip van aquatische produktie zijn het 'rivier continuum' concept en het "ecotoon" concept. De invloed van dieren, planten, microorganismen en interacties binnen het voedselweb op de aquatische produktie worden besproken. De gepresenteerde theoretische beschouwing over aquatische produktie heeft belangrijke implicaties voor het beheer van oppervlakte water en aquacultuur
