Impact of the tree species used on surface roughness of particleboard

The article deals with the impacts of various tree species in the surface layer of particleboards on surface roughness of these. For the purpose of showing the impacts, particles of spruce (Picea abies Karst), beech (Fagus silvatica L.), oak (Quercus robur L.) and poplar (Populus nigra L.) were used. Composition of wood particles was changed in the surface layer only. In describing the impact on surface roughness, parameters Ra, Rz and Rmax were used. In addition to the impact of tree species on surface roughness, profiles of density of fabricated boards were also determined, as well as average density of upper and lower two tenths of board thickness. The lowest thickness was found in boards whose surface layer consisted of particles of spruce and poplar, and of particles of oak and poplar. Maximum surface roughness was found in the board whose surface layer consisted of beech particles. In the case of boards consisting of particles of two, three or four tree species and also including beech particles, the latter were the main reason for high surface roughness of boards. Surface roughness to a large extent depends on density of the surface layer, for increasing density was found to decrease surface roughness
