The six localised selection programmes of the West Indies Sugarcane Breeding and Evaluation Network are described, following through from the planting of seedlings in stage 1 to the establishment of the stage 3 clonal trials, giving the selection criteria of each stage. Four important topics of the selection process are then discussed with reference to the localised programmes. These are: the number and type of characters and selection rate; experimental design and the use of standards; family or individual selection and finally selection in plant cane or ratoon.
