Regression equations for estimating biomass and volume of Brachystegia spiciformis in Zimbabwe

Brachystegia spiciformis Harms (msasa, igonde) is a dominant species of the miombo woodland and the broard-leafed savana areas of southern Africa, which grows on a wide variety of soils. The species is in high public demand because of its many uses as general purpose timber. It is used as fuel-wood, browse, barkrope and for making furniture and rail sleepers. Biomass estimates are important for studies of ecosystems functions such as nutrient cycling and energy flow. In terms of resources monitoring and management, such estimates also enable the resource manager (the farmer, forester, wildlife ecologist) to quantify available resources and to recommend levels of exploitation based on the abundance and regenerative capacity of the resource. The article summarises work undertaken to derive regression equations for estimating total above-ground biomass and volume of B. spiciformis in Zimbabwe.
