In this review, the effects of low temperature on plants are discussed, particularly changes in gene expression and function of activated proteins. Changes in the gene expresion of large numbers of genes occur due to low temperature stress, including shock response (detoxication): metabolic adjustment and acclimatization (replacement of cold-labile isoforms, decrease in membrane lipid saturation, synthesis of cryoprotectants) and proteins with unknown function. The fundamental aspects of these changes are the regulation of gene expression, including the sensing mechanisms, modulation of stress signals to cellular signals, transduction of the cellular signals to the nucleus and transcription control of stress-inducible genes.
