Cross-sectional shape models of Scots pine (Pinus silvestris) and Norway spruce (Picea abies)

英语. Three different models of the cross-sectional shape of tree trunks are tested on a sample of 100 Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) logs and 106 Norway spruce (Picea abies) logs. Two of the models were the classical 3-parametric circlemodel and the 5-parametric ellipse model. These models were compared to the third model, the Fourier coefficient model, which had a variable number of parameters. By increasing the number of parameters in the Fourier coefficient model, this model fits the true shape perfectly. With the same number of parameters the Fourier model performed approximately as good as the two other models. To get a substantial improvement over the ellipse model the number of parameters has to be raised dramatically.

Zwei davon sind die klassischen Modelle Kreis (mit drei Parametern)und Ellipse (mit funf Parametern). Diese Modelle wurden mit einem dritten verglichen, einem Fourier-Koeffizienten-Modell mit einer variablen Parameteranzahl. Durch Erhohen der Parameterzahl kann die wahre Form des Querschnitts mit dem dritten Modell perfekt simuliert werden. Mit gleicher Anzahl an Parametern wie bei den anderen Modellen werden jeweils ahnliche Ergebnisse erzielt. Um deutliche Verbesserungen gegenuber dem Ellipsen-Modell zu erhalten muss die Anzahl der Parameter drastisch erhoht werden.
