Production potential and ecological stability of mixed forest stands in uplands, 1: A conifer stand with the admixture of beech at an acid site of the Krtiny training forest enterprise

The paper deals with the production potential and ecological stability of a mixed stand (Norway spruce, silver fir, Scots pine, larch, beech) which is purposely left to its natural development without intentional thinning measures. In the course of a time series of 35 years (1961-1996), Norway spruce showed quite unexpectedly the highest increment of production parameters and very low mortality. Its original proportion of 21% increased to 30%. It is a case of an allochthonous spruce growing at a site with total annual precipitation amounting to 580 mm. Results obtained from one stand only cannot be overestimated, however, it is not possible to exclude spruce quite categorically from the species composition of mixed stands in upland regions.
