Yield test and tuber quality of pentaploids sweet potato

Sweet potato is a potential commodity as a source of foods with high content in protein, vitamins and minerals. Thirty six clones of pentaploids sweet potato were evaluated for yield and tuber quality together with 10 parental clones and 2 check clones. The field experiments were arranged in randomized complete block design with three replications. A unit plot consisted of a single row, 3 meters long, spaced at 1 meter apart and plant distance was 25 cm. A wide yield variation was observed among the pentaploid clones. Tuber yield varied from 2.2 to 23.1 Mg/ha. Dry matter content of the pentaploids ranged from 21.5 to 35.8 percent. Protein, total sugar and starch content on dry matter basis ranged from 1.31 to 2.9 percent, 4.3 to 10.9 percent, and 6.3 to 10.4 percent respectively. Among the pentaploid clones, 3 pentaploids showed tuber yield more than 20 Mg/ha, i.e. W68-1102(I), B021-1102(I) and CICEH32-1102(3), while the 3 pentaploids showed dry matter contents equal to or more than 35 percent, i.e. G15-1102(I), G15-1102(4) and CICEH32-1103(2)
