Twenty-four dairy cows in experiment 1 (field experiment) and twelve dairy cows in experiment 2 were used to evaluate the effect of NaOH treated wheat grain (3 % NaOH) on some metabolic variables, acid-base status, net acid-base excretion of urine and milk composition. In experiment 1 animals serum concentrations of urea, glucose (P0.001), NEFA (P0.001), acetic acid (P0.01) decreased and total protein, total lipids, triglycerids, lactic, betahydroxybutyric and butyric acids increased in SHW and GSW groups in comparison with control group. In experiment 2 increased values of HCO-3 and pCO2 (P0.001), ABE and SBC (P0.01) indicate the tendency of metabolic acidosis with stronger manifestation in control group.
