Field experiments were carried out with four varieties of very early potatoes (Impala, Ukama, Krystala and Koruna) on two localities with different climate (Zabcice 184 and Valecov 460 m altitudes) and two N doses (60 and 120 kg N.ha/l) to study the content of nitrates in the tubers. The highest content of nitrates was found in the Dutch variety Impala (296.2 mg NO3-.kg/l of fresh matter), the lowest in the other Dutch variety Ukama (184.1 mg NO3-.kg/l of fresh matter). The Czech varieties Krystala and Koruna were very balanced (251.8 and 252.4 mg NO3-.kg/l, respectively) and considerably differed from the two Dutch varieties. The N dose was also found to be a very important factor. After the application of 60 kg N.ha/l the average concentration of N was 207.4 mg NO3-.kg/l of fresh matter on both localities, after the application of 120 kg N.ha/l the concentration of nitrates increased to 284.7 mg NO3-.kg/l. The nitrate concentrations in Valecov were significantly lower than in Zabcice (212.4 and 279.6 mg NO3-.kg/l of fresh matter, respectively).
