Leafy vegetable breeding and growing is associated with a long-term tradition in the Czech Republic. The beginnings of plant breeding activities go back to the second-half of the preceding century. An initial breeding work provided a number of important landraces representing long time the background for growing of these vegetable species. From the first-half of the twenties this activity was intensively developed both in the private sphere and in some state institutions. After 1948 plant breeding was centred in specialized workplaces (plant breeding stations) as well as being conducted at research institutes and at the university level. Within the period 1960-1997 dozens of new original Czechoslovak cultivars of leafy vegetables were bred. Special attention was paid to lettuce. In the last decades efforts of research workers and plant breeders focused on gathering the germplasm of this plant group.
