Can artificial regeneration of forest stands and afforestation be rationalized by adjustment of stand density?

A reduction in the number of plants used for artificial regeneration of forest stands and afforestation is one of the possible ways of rationalization in the process of forest stand establishment. It is a procedure that may be efficient in terms of cost savings. It implies savings in planting stock cost, and further savings due to a smaller extent of operations including planting, treatment and protection of stands. Present regulations effective in the Czech Republic are reviewed, information on spacing experiments is summarized, and European general trends of plant numbers set out per unit area are described. It is concluded that rationalization measures consisting in a reduction of plant number set out per unit area in the CR are not currently feasible. The measures are limited by high losses in plantations (caused by the game) and by a hardly tolerable level of failures of stand establishment at present.
