英语. The development of the virus concept from Beijerinck (1898) to Matthews (1991) is presented and discussed. The analysis of the concepts on which the definitions of virus were founded, stresses an evolutive trend developing as the new knowledges on the physico-chemical and genetic properties of virus came to be defined. This trend has ultimately achieved a rigorous and universally accepted definition of virus. As to the living character of virus, the debate is not yet settled. L'analisi dei concetti che sono alla base di queste formulazioni mette in risalto una tendenza evolutiva sviluppatasi col progredire delle conoscenze sulla natura chimica e biologica dei virus. Questa tendenza, ancorche' sviluppatasi in modo non perfettamente lineare, e' infine giunta ad una rigorosa, ed universalmente accettata, definizione di virus che ne inquadra struttura chimica-fisica e funzioni genetiche. Relativamente al carattere vivente dei virus, non si e' raggiunto un unanime consenso.
