The objective of this study was to analyse soil moisture parameters and to compare them with actual field work operations. The results have confirmed that stickiness of the soil, in particular of the soil surface, is the crucial limiting factor of workability. Loose topsoils and the surface layer begin to smear and stick at relative low moisture contents, about at the lower plastic limit. For shallow working tillage operations (lower than 8 cm) this limit can hold as a field workability limit, whilst for deeper working operations and clay contents over 30 percent the arbitrary stickiness limit (WB=LPL+ 0.25 lp) is beeing confirmed
