Nitrogen leaching in different tillage systems

Soil tillage practices in the autumn showed a major influence on nitrogen mineralization during the autumn, indicating increased risks for nitrogen leaching in autumn and winter. In plots moulboard ploughed or stubble cultivated in early autumn, soil mineral nitrogen contents increased considerably during autumn, and the risk for losses by leaching from the soil became large due to high precipitation during autumn and winter. In plots tilled in late autumn the accumulation of mineralized nitrogen during autumn was very small. Postponing ploughing until the spring obviously reduced the risk of nitrogen leaching. Rye grass as an undersown catch crop reduced soil mineral nitrogen until ploughing in late autumn but did not affect nitrogen content in spring
