Effect of the environmental temperature and air moisture on some reproductive parameters in foaling mares
2000
Zeller, D. (Zoologicka Zahrada Mesta Brna (Czech Republic))
During five years 304 foaling Thoroughbred mares were observed. Average number of days from parturition to the onset of the first post-partum oestrus was 13.54+/-0.71 days. This interval significantly differed between the years and above all between the months. The mean interval in the coldest year 1991 (19.50+/-2.02) was significantly longer than intervals in the other years. The mean interval in January (24.5+/-1.85) was significantly longer than the other intervals. The interval was closely related to the mean environmental temperature in the post-partum period (r=-0.17) and to the average air moisture after birth (r=0.18). Average length of service period (SP) during the five years was 43.12+/-1.92 days. The length of SP did not differ significantly between the years, but significant variances were observed between the months. The clear and strong tendency to shorten the length of SP during the year was revealed. Service period was very closely related to the average environmental temperature (r=-0.26) and also to the average air moisture (r=0.27) in the puerperium.
