The in vitro estimation of energy value and organic matter digestibility of some tropical crop residues and browses used in intensive ruminant livestock production in the dry season

Metabolizable energy, gross energy (ME and GE) and organic matter (OM) digestibility of some tropical crop residues and browses in intensive ruminant nutrition in the dry season were evaluated. Crop residues were significantly lower (P0.05) in crude protein (CP) than in browses. Mean OM content was higher in the browses than in crop residues however, if there are differences they are of no statistical significant value. Neutral detergent fibre (NDF) was higher (P0.05) in crop residues. The ranking of the feeds by gas production was as follows: cassava ripe plantain peels unripe plantain peels maize cob (crop residues); Spondias mombin Vernonia amygdalina Gliricidia sepium Cassia siame (browses), respectively.
