Forty-eight technologies, research scientists, administrators, industrialist, academics and donor representatives from within and outside Southern African Development Community region met to debate the recommendations given in the draft report by R.K. Oniang`o on Sorghum and Pearl Millet Food Technology in SADC Countries. These proceedings present key extracts from the report, texts of nine papers containing supplementary information, and summaries of related discussions. It was agreed that workshop findings, and recommendations for action and fundding, should be forwarded to the Steering Committee of SADC/ICRISAT's Sorghum and Millet Improvement Program and the Board of Southern African Centre for Cooperation in Agriculture and Natural Resources Research and Training for their attention. These concerned specific activities for strengthening the sorghum and pearl millet food technology sector in the region, including the establishment of working groups on human resources development and database enhancement, and the creation of an information exchange network for graduate food technologists. A proposal was also made that SACCAR should consider inviting industrialists to participate in their deliderations on food technology.
