Fine and aromatic rice varietal development in the western hills of Nepal

Fine and aromatic rice research at the Agricultural Research Station, Lumle is aimed for developing high yielding and high quality fine and aromaric varieties for the hill of Nepal through selection from the local and exotic germplasms and lines and through recombining desirable traits adopting hybridization. During 1998 and 1999 local and exotic collections were evaluated in observation nursery and yield traits at Malepatan and Pakuwa and selections were done for advance and on-farm trials for the year 2000. Based on the agronomic performance over the years and locations, Kasturi/IEt 8580, IR 65610-105, Pusa 834 and Basmati 8482 were found promising and are selected for on-farm trials in the next season for yield and acceptance at the farm level. Other promising entries for Advance Varietal evaluation are IR 65610-38, CNTRL 85033, FRX 83F38, ARC 10679, IR 65617, IR 43850 and ARC 10059. A total of 136 fine-aromatic local germplasm collections were done in 1999 in addition to 76 done in 1997 and 1998. These collections will be assessed for yield, agronomic and quality parameters and used in varietal improvement. Assessment of quality parameters, milling recovery, grain length, shape and appearance and cooking and eating characteristics are being done recently to help selections for high consumers acceptance. Also Diallel crosses have been initiated in 1999 to estimate Genetic Combining Ability (GCA) of the selected local and exotic parents and to recombine desirable traits into the new breeding lines. Efforts will be made to study the effect of environment and the use of orgnic/inorganic sources of nutrients on the yield and aroma content of rice. Other hill centers will also be involved in the network of Fine-Aromatic Rice Research for evaluation of elite lines and related technologies.
