Accumulation of the biomass and some polyphenolic compounds in Rhaponticum carthamoides (Willd.) Iljn

Rhaponticum carthamoides is a perennial plant coming from the mountains of Siberia and Middle Asia. Its rhizomes and roots has been known for a long time as a medicinal raw material. The quantitative analysis of polyphenolic fractions from different plant organs indicated the presence of many phenolic acids, both in a free and in bound form. The differences in the composition of this group of compounds between underground and aboveground parts of plants and between leaves and stems were revealed. Taking into consideration the mass of above- and underground organs and the content of the flavonids and polyphenolic acids, the optimal time for collecting aboveground parts of plants seems to be the period since the stage of flowering to early autumn, for rhizomes and roots - late autumn
