Effect of industrial waste application on plant growth [Zea mays L. - Helianthus annuus L. - Gossypium hirsutum L. - Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.- Greece]

英语. The potential use, as soil-improving agent, of an industrial solid waste that contains manganese dioxide (MnO2) was studied in two-year field trials. The solid waste used was the by-product of an industry that produces raw material for dry cells. This by-product is neutralized with slaked lime. Chemical analysis indicated that it has pH 7.9 and contains total Mn 14.12%, high levels of Al, K, Ca, Fe, but lower levels of heavy metals such as Cu, Zn, Co, Cr, Ni, As, Cd and Sn. The solid waste amounts added to the soil one year before the beginning of this study were 0, 400, 500 and 600 t ha*[-1), while the experimental plants used for the following two consecutive years were corn (Zea mays), sunflower (Helianthus annuus), cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) and processing tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum). The results showed that the addition of 500 and 600 t ha*[-1) of by-product to the soil improved corn production by 8.1 times and sunflower seed yield by 4.0 times. The 1000 grain weight increased more than 2 times. The cotton fibre and the processing tomato production improved up to 3 times. The favourable effect of the solid waste on the cotton and processing tomato production was weaker during the second growing period

[E' stata studiata, in prove di campo della durata di due anni, l'utilizzazione potenziale di un rifiuto solido industriale contenente biossido di manganese (Mn02) come agente di miglioramento del terreno. Il rifiuto solido utilizzato era costituito dal sottoprodotto di una industria produttrice di materie prime per cellule a secco. Questo sottoprodotto viene neutralizzato con calce spenta. L'analisi chimica evidenziava un pH di 7,9, contenuto di Mn totale del 14,12%, livelli elevati di Al, K, Ca, Fe, ma quantita' minori di metalli pesanti quali Cu, Zn, Co, Cr, Ni, As, Cd e Sn. Le quantita' di rifiuto solido aggiunte al terreno un anno prima dell'inizio dello studio erano 0, 400, 500 e 600 t ha*[-1), mentre le piante utilizzate a livello sperimentale per i due anni successivi consecutivi erano mais (Zea mays), girasole (Helianthus annuus), cotone (Gossypium hirsutum) e pomodoro da industria (Lycopersicon esculentum). I risultati hanno messo in evidenza che l'aggiunta di 500 e 600 t ha*[-1) del sottoprodotto al terreno migliorava di 8,1 volte la produzione di mais e di 4,0 volte la resa in semi del girasole. Il peso di mille semi aumentava di piu' di due volte. La produzione di fibra di cotone e di pomodoro da industria aumentava fino a 3 volte.
