Population dynamics of citrus psylla (Diephorina citri Kuwayama) in the western hills of Nepal and spread of citrus greening disease

Monitoring of citrus psylla, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama was carried out at Yampaphant (450 masl), Tanahun; Lohi (650 masl), Tanahun; Bandippur (1,050) masl), Tanahun; Agriculture Research Station, Malepatan (850 masl), Kaski; Hemja (1,050 masl), Kaski; Agriculture Research Station, Lumle (1,450 masl), Kaski and Bhakimli (1,300 masl), Myagdi. Bright yellow sticky trap was used for monitoring the psyllid from September 1999 to April 2001. Yellow sticky trap was replaced by mouth aspirator at Yampaphant, Lohi and ARS, Malepatan from May 2001 to July 2001. D. citri was found at Yampaphant, Lohi, Nandipur, ARS, Malepatan and Bhakimli. No psyllid was observed at ARS, Lumle and Hemja. The presence of psyllid at Bandipur and Bhakimli (above 1000 masl) indicated a need for reformulating the altitude for citrus nursery establishment. As D. citri has been reported to be a vector mainly responsible for spread of citrus greening disease (CGD) in the country, citrus nursery should be established only in areas free of citrus psylla, CGD, CTV and Phytophthora diseases. The highest psyllid population was detected in spring and befor rainy season in low altitude areas while in high altitude areas high psyllid population was observed during rainy season.
