The field and laboratory studies on the nutritive value of harvest residues (roots + stubble + straw) of 2 pea and 2 field bean cultivars were carried out in 1994-96. The nutritive value of N and Ca present in pea roots with stubble and Ca present in pea straw and harvest residues (including straw) has proved to be better than that of field bean. On the other hand, K contents per sq. m were higher with field bean roots and stubble, and N, P, K and Mg contents were higher with field bean straw and overall harvest residues as compared to pea. The increase in mineral nutrients of the soil depended on the underploughed organic matter species of legumes and conditions during the growing season. Pea roots + stubble significantly increased N and Ca contents of the soil, while the same parts of field bean mainly affected K and N contents
